Financial Data Security Policy

Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) Compliance

This notice explains the security practices we use to protect your financial information and privacy and how we comply with the comprehensive data security requirements established by American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard Worldwide, and Visa Inc. International. These are called the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard (DSS). All merchants that process, store, or transmit payment card information for American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, or Visa are required to be PCI DSS compliant.

We have a separate privacy policy addressing privacy in general.

Businesses that collect credit card information to process online payments are required to:

  • Build and maintain a secure network to protect payment card information
  • Protect card holder information
  • Maintain a vulnerability management program
  • Implement strong access control measures
  • Regularly monitor and test networks
  • Maintain an information security policy

Internet and electronic security requirements change rapidly so we use the services of PayPal, a leading Internet financial service. PayPal constantly monitors Internet security developments, maintains secure services around the clock and around the world, and responds to security issues as they arise.

We use the PayPal service because we are too small an operation to maintain all the needed services and protections ourselves, because we have complete confidence in PayPal, and the service is reasonably priced. PayPal has achieved PCI DSS compliance certification under the Visa Cardholder Information Security Program and the MasterCard Site Data Protection Program. PayPal has also achieved the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant’s Statement of Auditing Standards #70 (SAS70) certification.

When you click a “Buy Now,” “Join,” “Subscribe,” or “Donate” button on our Website, you are immediately transferred to PayPal’s secure computer. You will see a padlock icon, probably in a lower corner of your browser but the placement depends on your browser. The padlock means the site is secure and all data that you send is encrypted during transmission to prevent disclosure to any electronic eavesdroppers.

Your payment is made on a secure, PayPal-hosted page. PayPal continually maintains and regularly validates its security. PayPal stores your credit card account information. We at Schoharie County Historical Society never see any of your financial information, and we do not have access to it. It does not even pass through our website because we transfer you to the secure PayPal website as soon as you click the button. When you complete your transaction, we receive an email notification of your transaction and that your payment has been deposited in our PayPal account. Your name, address, email address, and the amount of the transaction are given to us. We can withdraw the money from our PayPal account any time after it is deposited. You are sent a receipt by email and are transferred back to our website, to our “Thank You” page.
