Winter Lecture: The History of Sled Dogs
Join us as the Winter Lecture Series at the Old Stone Fort Museum kicks off with “The History of Sled Dogs” led by sled dog historian and experienced musher Vic DiSanto.
For nearly two decades, Mr. DiSanto and his majestic team of sled dogs have visited schools and winter festivals sharing the background of the Siberian Husky breed and teaching about the vital role it has played in our nation’s history.
From the Inuit Creation Myth and numerous Arctic expositions to the Alaskan Gold Rush, famed 1925 diphtheria serum run and the Iditarod sled race, Mr. DiSanto will tell the story of some of history’s greatest dogs and the men and women mushers who drove them.
He will also provide participants with the opportunity to take a hands-on look at the tools of a musher’s trade, including harnesses, dog booties, lines, cold weather clothing and snowshoes.
Participants may also have the opportunity to meet the friendly team themselves, seeing the beauty and grace of the breed up close!
Refreshments will be generously provided by Berkshire Farm Center & Services for Youth.
The event is being held in partnership with the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley and in lieu of admission, participants are welcome to bring donations for the animal shelter’s wish list.
