Winter Lecture: Schoharie’s Famous Easter Egg Exhibit
The 2019 Lecture Series at the Old Stone Fort Museum continues with a look back on the history and popularity of Schoharie’s Famous Easter Egg Exhibit, with Joe and Berna Heyman. The lecture will be held on Wednesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. in the Badgley Museum Annex at the Old Stone Fort Museum Complex.
Opening once again to the public in 2019, the exhibit features nearly 5,000 uniquely hand-painted eggs in virtually countless styles and themes.
Created by Mildred Vrooman and Elizabeth Warner starting in 1952, the exhibit has been a long cherished community treasure, with children and families returning year after year to see the growing collection of fanciful creations.
After decades on the move, the exhibit found a permanent home in 2001 when a building was built on Vrooman’s property specifically for the purpose of showcasing the thousands of pieces. Unfortunately, the exhibit was closed to the public just four years later and the property changed hands following Vrooman’s death at the age of 103 in 2012.
New owners Joseph and Berna Heyman appreciated the significance of the exhibit and re-opened it for a limited time in 2014. The re-opening brought in people by the droves who were revisiting a childhood favorite or seeing the impressive collection for the very first time.
During the lecture at the Old Stone Fort, the Heymans will tell the story of the iconic egg exhibit, its creators and their decision to re-open it for the benefit of the community.
Refreshments will be generously provided by Berkshire Farm Center & Services for Youth.
In 2019, the Easter Egg Exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the weekends of April 5-7 and April 12-14. The egg exhibit will also be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 19 and 20 and from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on April 21. The cost will be $5 per adult, $2 per child and $10 for families of up to four individuals. Proceeds from the Easter Egg Exhibit will benefit the Schoharie Free Library.
