Site Tour: “The Restless Palatines of the Schoharie Valley”
Join local historian Jeff O’Connor on this walking lecture on the grounds of the Old Stone Fort Museum. This interactive tour will use the museum’s New World Dutch Barn and Hartman’s Dorf House to help describe Palatine lifestyle and aspirations during their stay in the Schoharie Valley. The grounds and surrounding landscape, which were once part of Foxes Dorf, will help illustrate parts of the story that are not well known.
O’Connor has done extensive research for a book project entitled “Skohere – and the Birth of New York’s Western Frontier 1639-1731” and will be presenting fresh perspectives and new insights into the Palatine experience in the Schoharie Valley.
His narrative will combine visual landmarks with documentary evidence to explore the locations and history of the first churches, roads, mills, and other elements of development nearby.
The program is included in the price of museum admission: $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $3 for students 5-17 years.
