Rediscovering the Forgotten History of African Americans in Schoharie County: The Final Chapter
The final installment in the Schoharie County Historical Society’s Black History Lecture Series “Rediscovering the Forgotten History of African Americans in Schoharie County” will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 24 at the Schoharie Reformed Church located at 258 Main Street, in Schoharie, NY.
Inspired by the final chapters of the book “Discovering the Forgotten History of Blacks in Schoharie County”, written by the late Jack Daniels, the evening’s presentation will be led by local author and historian Karen Cuccinello and will focus on the history of the Johnson Hotel and its inspiring proprietor James Andrew “Andy” Johnson.
Following the presentation, various guest lecturers from throughout the series, along with members of the audience, will be invited to share their final thoughts and takeaways from the series before enjoying light refreshments during a closing reception.
The location of the event holds a special significance to the Old Stone Fort Museum and Schoharie County Historical Society, as the Schoharie Reformed Church was an early and lasting home to the congregation which eventually saw to the 1772 building of the stone church known today as the Old Stone Fort Museum, which in 2022 is celebrating its 250th Anniversary.
