SUMMARY:David Williams Historic Marker Dedication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:A dedication ceremony will be held for a Pomeroy Foundation NYS historical marker commemorating the legacy of David Williams in Schoharie\, N.Y. The unveiling will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday\, August 1\, 2026. \nThe Schoharie County Historical Society has been awarded a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation to install a historical marker commemorating the burial site of Revolutionary War hero Private David Williams at the Old Stone Fort. The fully funded marker recognizes the historical significance of Williams\, a member of the Westchester County Militia whose actions helped alter the course of the American Revolution. \nThe ceremony will open with the National Anthem performed by Aleah Becker\, a senior at Middleburgh High School. Becker has appeared in more than a dozen musical productions\, with favorite roles including Anne Boleyn in SIX and Karen Smith in Mean Girls. \nDr. Vic DiSanto\, whose research and successful grant application made the marker possible\, will speak about Williams’ pivotal role in the American Revolution. Following the unveiling\, members of the 3rd Tryon County Militia will present a ceremonial gun salute. \nDavid Williams\, along with his fellow militiamen John Paulding and Isaac Van Wart arrested Major John Andrè on September 23\, 1780\, in Tarrytown\, NY. They refused a bribe by Andrè for his release and turned him over to Colonel John Jameson at Continental Army headquarters in North Castle\, foiling Benedict Arnold’s scheme to turn over West Point and George Washington to the British. \nThe Pomeroy Foundation’s New York State program provides fully funded grants for historical markers commemorating historic people\, places\, things and events in the Empire State. The program also fills a gap\, as New York State stopped funding their roadside markers in 1939. More information about the Pomeroy Marker grant program is available at wgpfoundation.org. \nMore About the Pomeroy Foundation \nThe William G. Pomeroy Foundation® is committed to supporting the celebration and preservation of community history; and working to improve the probability of finding appropriate donor matches or other life-saving treatments for blood cancer patients. Established by Trustee Bill Pomeroy in 2005 to bring together his two greatest passions\, the Pomeroy Foundation is a private\, philanthropic organization located in Syracuse\, N.Y. As the nation’s leading funder of historical roadside markers\, the Pomeroy Foundation has awarded more than 3\,000 grants for markers and bronze plaques in 49 states and Washington\, D.C. To learn more about the Pomeroy Foundation\, visit wgpfoundation.org. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Join us at the Gallupville House for a presentation about Reds on the Ballot: Communists\, The Bonus Army\, and the 1932 Election with a more in-depth look at the 1932 elections by Brad Towle.
