SUMMARY:Schoharie County: Breadbasket of the Revolution? - Presentation by Jeff O'Connor
DESCRIPTION:Join us for local historian Jeff O’Connor’s presentation “Schoharie County: Bread Basket of the American Revolution?” as he takes a fresh look at one of the region’s most enduring claims. Long celebrated as the “Breadbasket of the Revolution\,” the Schoharie Valley’s reputation is put to the test through firsthand accounts\, wartime records\, and the dramatic events of 1780\, including Sir John Johnson’s raid. Drawing on decades of research and experience\, O’Connor explores whether this cherished title withstands scrutiny\, or if a more complex story lies just beneath the surface. \nThis event is open to the public\, with a suggested donation of $5 per person to support programming. The lecture is generously supported by our 2026 Lecture Sponsor Fenimore Asset Management.

SUMMARY:Author's Talk - “Fallen Heroes: The Civil War Dead of the Town of Jefferson\, Schoharie County\, NY” by Stephanie Ruquet
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Author’s Talk with Stephanie Ruquet! “Fallen Heroes” is the culmination of years of meticulous research by Stephanie Ruquet a trustee of the Schoharie County Historical Society and officer of the Jefferson Historical Society. In this remarkable book\, she documents and tells the stories of the 51 Civil War soldiers from Jefferson\, NY\, who unfortunately didn’t come home. \nStephanie began her work with the 28 men commemorated on Jefferson’s Evergreen Cemetery Civil War monument\, erected in 1868\, the first of its kind in Schoharie County. Her research expanded far beyond the monument\, uncovering the stories of 51 Jefferson men who lost their lives during the war\, many from disease or the brutal conditions of Confederate prisons like Andersonville\, rather than the battlefield. \nEach soldier is remembered in her book with a dedicated entry that brings their life and service to light. During this special talk\, Stephanie will share her fascinating discoveries and the stories behind these local heroes. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to hear firsthand about Jefferson’s Civil War history and the extraordinary efforts behind “Fallen Heroes.” \nThis event is open to the public\, with a suggested donation of $5 per person to support programming. The lecture is generously supported by our 2026 Lecture Sponsor Fenimore Asset Management.
