SUMMARY:Skohere and the Birth of New York's Western Frontier 1609-1731 Volume III by Jeff O'Connor
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Badgley Museum Annex as local historian and author Jeff O’Connor delves into his latest book\, “Skohere and the Birth of New York’s Western Frontier 1609-1731 Volume III.” \nThe previous two volumes\, which have been heading toward the Palatine arrival and all the people and events connected to the Schoharie Valley or impacted its early colonial history\, coalesce in Volume III\, the last of the “Skohere and the Birth of New York’s Western Frontier 1609-1731” trilogy series. \nThe Palatine experiences from Europe to the Schoharie Valley are traced\, with emphasis on why they came\, what led them to think they had land set aside for them in the Schoharie Valley\, and what caused many to leave. Along the way\, their immigrant story impacts others who may be viewed as in their way or are helpful. Key to the narrative is the involvement of the Mohawk people\, especially chief Hendrick and the real events behind the Mohawk acceptance of the palatines in their country. \nThe narrative of the settlement of the Palatines in the Schoharie Valley is not a traditional one – the establishment of the dorfs\, the conflict with Adam Vrooman and the partners who bought the land beneath them\, and why many left for the Mohawk Valley and Pennsylvania\, are fully explored and challenge what has previously been known. \nWhat all three volumes add to the history of New York State is not only the first biography of the Schoharie Valley’s early colonial past\, but also its place in the greater movement from the Hudson River west into Haudenosaunee country. The Palatines pushed the western frontier further and faster than all that had been done in the 100 years prior to their arrival and made a lasting impact on how New York developed from a colonial province to a state.

SUMMARY:Philip Schuyler Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The Schoharie County Historical Society is hosting local historian Jon Jasewicz as General Philip Schuyler on February 22 at 2:00 pm at the Badgley Museum Annex. \nPhilip Schuyler (1733–1804) was a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. In 1775\, General Washington gave Schuyler command over the New York Department of the Continental Army. He played a key role in the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga\, as well as in earlier campaigns\, including the Invasion of Canada\, and the Battles of Lake Champlain and Fort Ticonderoga. Schuyler also served as an Indian Commissioner\, attempting to gain the support of the Six Nations Confederacy against the British. \nJon Jasewicz is a historian primarily focused on the colonial period in New York’s Capital Region and Mohawk Valley. He has been a living historian for nearly a decade\, and has co-authored papers such as “‘Led Into The Fire Of The Whole Body Of The Enemy’: Archaeological Survey Of The Stone Arabia Battlefield 19 October 1780.”

SUMMARY:The Hudson River Schools of Art and Their Ice Age Origins
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Robert and Johanna Titus \nDuring the 19th century there was something of a cultural Renaissance right here in the Hudson Valley region. America’s first worldclass literature appeared. We also saw the birth of American landscape architecture. Most importantly\, led by Thomas Cole\, we saw the appearance of the Hudson Valley School of Art. In short\, our region became the center of a truly important cultural movement. None of this\, we argue\, would ever have happened if the Hudson Valley\, especially the North Lake area\, had not been so heavily glaciated. We take our readers to see how the North Lake glaciers created the landscapes that so inspired the great artists of those times. \nThen we look down into the Hudson Valley. First it is filled with ice but later it is filled with the glacial meltwaters of something called Lake Albany. Those waters drained away and platforms composed of lake sediment emerged. When the Livingston family came along\, they built their mansions upon those platforms. Their architects designed the grounds so that scenic views were opened up. These are called planned views\, and they became central to landscape architecture as it developed all across America. \nEvent held in Badgley Museum Annex across the street from the Fort.
