MUSEUM INTERPRETER

 Part-Time, Seasonal (May – October 2026)

The Old Stone Fort Museum seeks a part-time, seasonal Museum Interpreter for the 2026 operating season. This position is compensated at $17.00 per hour and reports directly to the Site Administrator. The Interpreter will typically work weekend hours, with occasional weekdays, events, and holiday shifts as needed. Expected weekly hours range from 5 to 20 hours.

Responsibilities

  • Greet visitors and provide an introductory overview of the museum complex and its history
  • Accurately and engagingly interpret local and site-specific history for diverse audiences
  • Collect admission fees, process gift shop sales, and reconcile daily cash receipts
  • Track and record daily attendance and visitor zip codes
  • Open and close museum buildings, including arming and disarming the security system
  • Answer visitor questions and phone calls in a courteous, professional, and informed manner
  • Raise and lower the site flag at the beginning and end of shifts
  • Perform light cleaning and routine maintenance tasks as needed
  • Study and learn local history to ensure accuracy in interpretation
  • Dress in a clean, neat, and appropriate manner for a family-friendly museum environment. Clothing should be free of offensive language or imagery and not include items such as crop tops, excessively short shorts, skirts, dresses, or other overly revealing attire
  • Complete other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for engaging with the public and a willingness to learn new information
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to interact with visitors of all ages and backgrounds
  • Demonstrated interest in history or public education
  • Ability to work independently and reliably manage the site during open hours
  • Basic math and cash-handling skills
  • Attention to detail and respect for museum security procedures
  • High school diploma or equivalency required; some college education or relevant experience preferred
  • Previous customer service, education, or museum experience a plus
  • Willingness to wear historic attire on occasion (encouraged but not required)
  • Ability to stand, walk on uneven ground, climb stairs, bend, carry and lift up to 25 pounds, and perform light physical tasks throughout a shift
  • Final candidates will be required to complete a background check and child safety training upon hire
