Carl Skidmore was a Jefferson native who served in World War I. Skidmore served in France from July to November 1918 in the 6th Marines. He was cited for bravery by Field Marshall Petain for his actions in the Battle of Blanc Mont Ridge where he was gassed and injured in the thumb.
In November 1919, Skidmore was injured in the thigh and abdomen and died in a field hospital the same day. He was buried in a cemetery in France, then eventually was returned home to his family in 1921. Our gift shop sells a book about him written by Stephanie Ruquet and Kevin Berner with material provided by Frank Skidmore Jr, titled Dear Mama, Papa, and All: Remembering a World War I Marine from Jefferson.
