From 1903 to 1909, New York did not issue license plates, though they did issue registration and a badge. The registration was displayed in the rear of the vehicle, and license pads (or plates) made of leather had to be custom-made.
On the reverse of the license pad is another earlier version reading JER. This side was done in 1901 when only the owner’s initials were required to be displayed. This side opens the possibility that the Rambler was purchased from John E. Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt’s uncle.
